Consistent and Reliable

Consistent and Reliable

When it comes to dependability, the SRAM Red eTap electronic groupset shines.

Unlike traditional cable-driven systems that can stretch and wear out over time, the SRAM Red eTap is designed to be responsive and consistent. With no cables to worry about, you can expect flawless shifts every time you ride.

Additionally, the absence of derailleur cables means you’ll never have to replace them, saving you both time and money in the long run.

Easy Setup and Maintenance

Easy Setup and Maintenance

Setting up the SRAM Red eTap is a breeze. With no cables to route and adjust, installation is quick and straightforward.

The wireless design eliminates the need for complicated cable routing, making it easier for riders of all skill levels to set up their drivetrain.

Additionally, the lack of cables reduces the risk of cable-related issues such as cable fraying or tangling. With the SRAM Red eTap, you can spend less time on maintenance and more time enjoying your ride.

Battery Life and Management

The SRAM Red eTap features a reliable and long-lasting battery. The system goes to sleep when not in use, preserving battery life and ensuring it lasts for multiple rides.

Not to mention, the front derailleur battery weighs 187g and can be easily swapped with the rear battery if needed. Recharging the battery is quick, with a recharge time of just 40 minutes.

And LED lights on the shifters and derailleurs provide clear battery life indicators, so you’ll always know when it’s time for a recharge. Additionally, the eTap system is ANT+ compatible, allowing for low-battery warnings to be displayed on compatible Garmin devices.

Convenient Shifting from Anywhere

Convenient Shifting from Anywhere

One of the key advantages of the SRAM Red eTap is the ability to shift from anywhere on the handlebars. The system offers the option to incorporate “Blip” satellite shifters, which can be positioned under or over the bar tape.

These Blips provide additional flexibility and convenience, allowing riders to shift with their thumbs or index fingers. At the same time, the secure placement of the Blips prevents accidental shifts, even when riding over rough surfaces or with bulky gloves on.

With the SRAM Red eTap, you have the freedom to shift effortlessly, enhancing your overall riding experience.

Smooth and Silent Shifting

Smooth and Silent Shifting

During our extensive testing, we found that the SRAM Red eTap delivers smooth and silent shifting. The system moves the chain across the cassette with precision and minimal noise.

While the rear outboard shifts are slightly slower compared to the mechanical Red, the difference is negligible. But the shift speed is not adjustable, but the eTap system strikes a balance between shift speed, chain management, and battery life.

The SRAM Red eTap allows for simultaneous shifting of the front and rear derailleurs, making it easy to find the perfect gear ratio for any riding condition.

Weight and Compatibility

Weight and Compatibility

In terms of weight, the SRAM Red eTap is slightly heavier than its mechanical counterpart. However, the weight difference is minimal and does not significantly impact the overall performance of the drivetrain.

And the eTap system is compatible with existing 11-speed SRAM components, allowing riders to upgrade their drivetrain without having to replace their entire setup.

The ability to incorporate a Quarq power meter neatly into the Red group is another advantage of the SRAM Red eTap, providing riders with valuable training data.

When it comes to purchasing new tires for your vehicle, getting the right size is crucial. But how do you determine the correct tire width? Whether you’re replacing your current tires or exploring options for a different look or performance, understanding tire sizing is essential.

The numbers and indicators on your tire’s sidewall hold the key to unlocking the mysteries of tire width. They reveal vital information about the size, type, and performance of the tire.

By delving into these numbers, you can ensure that the tires you choose align with your vehicle’s requirements.

Today, we’ll unlock the secret intricacies of tire width. We’ll decipher the letters and numbers on your tire’s sidewall, demystify tire sizing, and equip you with the knowledge to make informed decisions.

Tire Sizing Explained in Short

Before we jump to the main section, here are tire sizing secrets in short:

Tire SizingDescription
Tire WidthRefers to the width of the tire’s tread in millimeters. It is measured from sidewall to sidewall when the tire is properly inflated and mounted on a recommended rim width.
Aspect RatioRepresents the ratio of the tire’s height to its width. It is expressed as a percentage and calculated by dividing the tire’s sidewall height by its width.
Rim DiameterIndicates the diameter of the rim, measured in inches or millimeters, on which the tire is intended to be mounted. It should match the diameter of the rim you are using or planning to use.
Load IndexIndicates the maximum load capacity that a tire can safely support when properly inflated. It is represented by a numerical value, and the higher the number, the greater the load capacity.
Speed RatingDenotes the maximum speed that a tire can handle safely. It is represented by a letter code, and each letter corresponds to a specific speed range. Higher speed ratings indicate a higher maximum speed capability.
Tread PatternRefers to the design and arrangement of the tire’s tread blocks, grooves, and sipes. Different tread patterns are optimized for specific road conditions, such as all-season, winter, or off-road driving.
Tire TypeSpecifies the intended use or application of the tire, such as passenger car, truck, SUV, or specialty tires for specific purposes like racing or off-roading.
Seasonal RatingIndicates the tire’s suitability for specific weather conditions. Common ratings include all-season, winter, and summer tires, each designed to provide optimal performance in different seasons.

Tire sizes are typically represented by a combination of numbers and letters. For example, let’s consider the size “225/50R17”. Each element in the size has a specific meaning and provides information about the tire’s dimensions and characteristics.

Step 2: Identify the Width

The first number in the size, in our example “225”, represents the tire’s width in millimeters. It’s the measurement of the tire’s tread from sidewall to sidewall when properly inflated.

Step 3: Determine the Aspect Ratio

Following the width, the next number, such as “50”, represents the aspect ratio. It indicates the ratio of the tire’s height to its width. In our example, the height is 50% of the width.

A higher aspect ratio indicates a taller sidewall, which can contribute to a more comfortable ride and better absorption of road irregularities. On the other hand, a lower aspect ratio means a shorter sidewall, which can enhance handling and responsiveness, especially during cornering.

Determine the Aspect Ratio

Choosing the right aspect ratio depends on your preferences and the specific requirements of your vehicle. It’s important to consider factors such as ride comfort, handling performance, and the intended use of the tire when selecting the appropriate aspect ratio.

Step 4: Recognize the Construction Type

The letter following the aspect ratio, in our case “R”, signifies the construction type. “R” stands for radial, which is the most common type of tire construction today. Radial tires have ply cords that run perpendicular to the tire’s tread.

There are other types of tires too. To help you understand, we have created a table covering the basics of each tire.

Tire Construction TypeDescription
RadialRadial tires are the most common type of tire construction used today.
They have ply cords that run perpendicular to the tire’s tread, providing improved stability, traction, and a smoother ride.
Radial tires are known for their excellent fuel efficiency and longer tread life.
They offer a comfortable driving experience and are suitable for a wide range of vehicles and driving conditions.
Bias-PlyBias-ply tires feature layers of ply cords that crisscross at an angle, typically 30 to 40 degrees.
This construction provides greater sidewall stiffness and durability, making them suitable for heavy-duty applications such as off-road or agricultural use.
Bias-ply tires are known for their robustness and resistance to punctures, but they generally offer less traction and fuel efficiency compared to radial tires.
They are commonly found in specialized vehicles and specific industrial applications.
Bias-BeltedBias-belted tires combine aspects of both radial and bias-ply construction.
They feature belts made of steel or other materials that run under the tread area while maintaining bias-ply sidewalls.
This construction offers enhanced stability, improved handling, and increased load-carrying capacity.
Bias-belted tires are often used in high-performance vehicles or applications where a balance between performance and durability is desired.
Run-FlatRun-flat tires are designed with reinforced sidewalls that can support the weight of a vehicle even when they are completely deflated. This allows drivers to continue driving for a limited distance at a reduced speed, providing convenience and safety in case of a puncture or loss of tire pressure.
Run-flat tires eliminate the need for immediate roadside tire changes and spare tires. However, they typically have a firmer ride quality and may be more expensive than standard tires.

Step 5: Know the Rim Diameter

The number after the construction type, like “17” in our example, indicates the rim diameter in inches. It tells you the size of the wheel the tire is designed to fit. The rim diameter plays a crucial role in ensuring proper fitment of the tire onto the wheel.

It is important to match the rim diameter specified by the tire with the diameter of the wheel on your vehicle. Using the correct rim diameter ensures a secure and safe fit, allowing the tire to perform optimally and maintain proper contact with the road surface.

There are some traditional sizes available and the sizes vary depending on the vehicle. To give you a clear understanding, we have also created a table:

Traditional Tire SizingRim Diameter (inches)Suitable Vehicle Types
12″12Compact cars, small motorcycles
13″13Compact cars, small motorcycles
14″14Compact cars, sedans, hatchbacks

When selecting tires for your vehicle, it is essential to consider the appropriate rim diameter to ensure compatibility and avoid any fitment issues. The rim diameter is typically specified in inches and can vary depending on the specific vehicle make and model.

Step 6: Optional Additional Information

Optional Additional Information

In some tire sizes, you might find additional information like load index and speed rating. The load index represents the maximum load capacity the tire can handle, while the speed rating indicates the maximum speed the tire is designed to withstand safely.

Step 7: Check for Specialty Designations

Certain tire sizes might have specialty designations, such as “LT” for light trucks or “XL” for extra loads. These designations indicate specific tire types or capabilities.

Here’s another table including all the specialty designation for certain tire sizes:

Specialty DesignationMeaning

It’s close to seeing the face of a new baby for the first time. OK that’s a bit much but it’s very exciting.

“Optional wireless” leavers and 12 speed shifting Shimano Dura-Ace and Ultegra components will be shipping December 2021 and promise to be all we ever wanted from a road group. With the focus on pedal efficiency and revised chainring ratios the new 12 speed will be the professional and competitive riders group of choice.

Disc or rim braking but electronic Di2 shifting only the leavers have CR1632 coin cell batteries or the option to use the small diameter SD-300 Di2 wire for those who don’t want to consider multiple battery levels.

With a new 3 port internal battery the Di2 junctions we are so familiar with are now gone and the group is way simpler to spec and install than ever before.

Both derailleurs plug directly into the battery, the battery has a third port for the optional wired shifting. Charging takes place through the rear derailleur which is the brain of the entire system. No more optional WU-111 junction, the wireless Ant+ connectivity is taken care of by the rear derailleur.

Cassette optionsDura-Ace has three cassette options 11-12, 11-30 and 11-34 while Ultegra only has two 11-30 and 11-34

Chainring options. Dura Ace has three chainring options 54/40, 52/36 and 50/34 while Ultegra only has two 52/36 and 50/34 – Goodbye to the old standard 53/39 which we assume Shimano felt was not needed for recreational riding but not large enough for the pro or competitive racer.

Dura-Ace has three cassette options

160mm crank length options have been added to both Dura-Ace and Ultegra with the 180mm Dura-Ace crank length no longer offered.

Cassette compatibility: Shimano 12 speed road cassettes will fit previous generation HG11 freehubs but the new 12 speed wheels are not compatible with older 11 speed cassettes.

Wheels. Dura Ace C35, C50 and C60 Disc brake wheels available in tubeless clincher but nothing in tubular and no rim brake wheels. Ultegra wheels are available in C36, C50 and C60 and also no tubular or rim brake options.

Power Meter. Optional Dura-Ace and Ultegra power meter cranks are available. We assume Shimano has taken the best of Pioneer and the gen one 9100-P crank and refined it. Add $845 for Dura-Ace and Ultegra.

Disc brake levers are larger than the previous generation and the Di2 buttons are further apart giving the rider more differentiation between and down shifting. With a slight inward sweep the new levers might take some time to get used to looking at but we expect big things as far as functionality.

Ultegra 12 speed get's the RT-MT800

The 12 speed chain is the same chain Shimano have been using in the 12 speed mountain bike groups and the bottom brackets remain unchanged. Goes without saying Shimano has stuck to the alloy crank with hollow chainrings and 24mm steel spindle format that works so well.

Disc brake rotors. Like the 12 speed chain there are no new disc brake rotors. Shimano Dura-Ace groups get the 4 arm RT-MT900 rotors used in the XTR groups and the Ultegra 12 speed get’s the RT-MT800

Weight has gone up ever so slightly over the previous generation of Dura-Ace and Ultegra which we find a little surprising given the average weight of a disc brake bike is a good bit more than we were used to some 10 years back at the height of rim brakes.

Price of the new groups did not go up much at all which was a pleasant surprise to us. Less than 10% more than the previous 11 speed groups.

Availability. Get yourself a good book or rather put your name in the hat and wait for it to be called. We have been told first groups will ship in Dec 2021 and after that it’s going to be a consistent flow FIFO.

Demand will far exceed supply and it’s probably years before there is a surplus of inventory in the market. We will be updating our site with eta dates as best we can.

Shimano Dura-Ace 12 Speed & Ultegra 12 Speed reviews we will get to as soon as we get to build some bikes. For now we are going to get to reading that book and some lamaze breathing exercises.

Ergonomic Design

The Campagnolo Potenza embraces an ergonomic design that ensures both comfort and performance.

The Ergopower shifters of the Potenza exhibit a familiar feel, reminiscent of its top-of-the-range counterparts. With slightly rounded hoods and the incorporation of Vari-Cushion technology, riders can expect enhanced comfort during long rides.

The thoughtful ergonomics provide a natural grip and reduce hand fatigue. Even I was impressed with the comfort. Had a good ride last month and it wasn’t bad.

Whether you’re tackling challenging climbs or embarking on long-distance rides, the Potenza’s ergonomic design ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

It’s mainly the attention to detail that sets this groupset apart from any other groupset.

650b vs 700c: Unveiling the Differences

When it comes to choosing the right wheel size for your bike, the debate between 650b and 700c often takes center stage. Here we explore the dissimilarities between these two wheel sizes and uncover the best-suited option for your cycling needs.

Diameter Distinctions:

650b wheels measure 584 mm in diameter, making them approximately 38mm (about 1.5 inches) smaller than their 700c counterparts.

While 700c wheels are sometimes referred to as 29ers or 28 inches, all three share the same diameter of 622 mm. The term “700c” is commonly associated with road bike wheels featuring narrow rims.

Tire Width Versatility

Many gravel, touring, and cyclocross bike frames impose restrictions on maximum tire width, typically accommodating 700c x 40-45 mm tires. By swapping to 650b wheels, you can often fit wider tires ranging from 47-53 mm (up to about 2.1 inches).

The increased tire width of 650b wheels results in a larger contact patch with the ground compared to the narrower tires of 700c wheels, offering improved traction and stability.

Structural Strength and Load Capacity:

Due to their smaller diameter, 650b wheels utilize shorter spokes, resulting in a structurally stronger wheel build.

This increased strength allows 650b wheels to handle heavier loads without compromising performance, making them ideal for bicycle tourists or heavier riders.

In addition to their load-bearing capabilities, 650b wheels contribute to a smoother and more comfortable ride. The use of wider, higher volume tires, typically run at the lower air pressure, absorbs shocks and vibrations from the road, enhancing overall ride quality.

Climbing Gears and Frame Geometry:

Swapping from 700c to 650b wheels provides an extra-low gear ratio, granting cyclists an advantage when conquering challenging climbs.

On small-framed bikes, 650b wheels often align more favorably with frame geometry, creating a more comfortable and natural riding position.

The reduced wheel diameter also slightly lowers the top tube, decreasing the standover height.

Speed, Aerodynamics, and Versatility:

The lighter weight and improved aerodynamics of 650b wheels enable faster acceleration, particularly advantageous in stop-and-go city riding scenarios.

Additionally, transitioning to 650b wheels can transform your bike into a multi-use machine. Some modern 700c road bikes have limited clearance, accommodating only narrow 25mm tires without room for fenders.

By switching to 650b wheels, you gain the freedom to install wider tires and fenders, expanding the range of terrain and weather conditions you can confidently navigate.

As you embark on your wheel size decision, it’s essential to consider your riding preferences and intended terrain. If you prioritize agility, enhanced traction, and a smoother ride on rougher surfaces, 650b wheels may be your optimal choice.

Alternatively, if speed, efficiency, and compatibility with narrower tires are paramount, 700c wheels might better align with your cycling aspirations.
